On Sunday March 1, 2020, nine Granville Junior and Seniors spent 14 hours working on the MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge. The MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge is a contest where students experience what it’s like to work as a team to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints, akin to those faced by professional mathematicians working in the industry. The challenge spotlights applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool, and as a viable and exciting profession. Students are encouraged to explore and bolster their mathematical modeling know-how to position themselves for success. Once downloaded, the countdown begins, and the teams only have 14 hours to gather data and information, document their assumptions, and devise a mathematical model to provide insight about the issue before uploading their solution via the internet. Most students would agree, that is a challenging but rewarding experience. Myles at the conclusion of the contest stated: "I could do this for as a career." The current Juniors are ready to participate again next year even wondering if we can start preparing for next year.
