Recently, Mr. Lambert’s Sports & Society and Current Events in Sports & Society Distance Learning classes hosted guest speaker Noah Murdock, whose story of perseverance inspired students.
After being drafted in the 38th round by the Washington Nationals out of Colonial Heights (VA) High School, Murdock pitched at the University of Virginia.
Murdock earned a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team in 2017, but an injury led to Tommy John surgery, limiting his sophomore season. However, his determination helped him return as Virginia’s "Friday night starter" in his junior year.
Drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2019, Murdock worked his way through the Minor Leagues, ending 2024 with the Omaha Storm Chasers. A right-handed reliever with a fastball topping 100 mph, he struck out 72 batters in 62.2 innings last season.
In December, the Athletics selected him in the Rule 5 Draft, and shortly after speaking to our class, he reported to spring training in Arizona, aiming to make their MLB roster.
Murdock shared his journey with Distance Learning students from Amsterdam, Gloversville, Oppenheim Ephratah-St. Johnsville (OESJ), and Granville via Webex, stressing the importance of goal setting, relationship building, personal reflection, and staying true to oneself.
His advice resonated particularly with student-athletes, offering valuable insights that can contribute to success both in sports and beyond.
Granville senior Liam Farrell shared, "Noah’s story shows how to push yourself and always have a goal. His humility and drive to improve were the most valuable takeaways for me."
OESJ student Baler Stowell said, "Hearing about being drafted and his first college start was amazing. His advice to never give up, even through injury, really stuck with me."
Amsterdam baseball player Anthony Lopez added, "Noah’s story of overcoming injuries and his professionalism stood out. He emphasized the importance of perseverance to achieve your goals."
Murdock reflected, "When I was in school I always learned a lot from guest speakers, and I’m grateful to be at a point where my experiences can help others. Life is about learning from experience, and listening to others share their experiences has always been beneficial to me. I’m eager to share my journey."
Mr. Lambert praised Murdock’s character, stating, "Noah’s success is impressive, but his character and humility are what stand out. I’m grateful for his willingness to share his story and wish him the best as he pursues his MLB dreams."
Thank you to Mr. Lambert for continuing to make our Granville classrooms engaging and insightful!
